Now, if you don’t know what psychological horror is (by any chance), then it basically revolves around people’s feelings, thoughts and all sorts of messed up parts that have to do with the head. In other words, it all about people going crazy or otherwise. But have you ever watched an anime that gets so screwed up without showing a drop of blood? Well, you might be able to see the first of its kind right here.

Aku no Hana revolves Kasuga Takao, a bookworm who has delved his life into a particular novel called “The Flowers of Evil” (sidenote: this is based on an actual book by Charles Baudelaire and is what the series is named after) in which believes has changed his life. He also has a crush on a girl in his class called Saeki Nanako but can’t conjure up the courage to confess. One day, he forgets his book in the classroom, returning to find the gym clothes of his beloved Saeki. However, in a turn of events, he accidentally takes the clothes home. Knowing that he has done a terrible thing, he pretends that nothing happens, not knowing that a girl in his class called Nakamura Sawa was watching him the entire time. Nakamura decides to blackmail Kasuga into a “contract”, otherwise she will reveal the secret.
The anime is most famous for its life-like art style and powerful psychological scenes.

The anime aired for 13 episodes, airing during the Spring 2013 Anime Season (April 2013 – June 2013) and is based off a manga serialization written and illustrated by Oshimi Shuuzou (who, fun fact, also guest starred as the voice for the owner of the book store). The anime is animated by Zexcs Studios, who have also made many notable anime’s including MY-Hime, Speed Grapher and Da Capo (alongside with Feel. Studios).

There are not many notable voice actors and actresses that make an appearance in this series but those that are notable include Ise Mariya who voices Nakagawa (and is also known as the voices of Killua in HunterxHunter and Stocking in Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt) and Hikasa Yoko who voices Saeki (and is also known as the voices of Mio from K-ON! and Seraphim from Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?).

As I mentioned in my latest video, this anime was extremely under-rated in my opinion. There were many people who dropped the subject because of the unique artwork, as it was “not very anime-like”. I call bullsh*t! I think this art style added a massive effect to the psychological horror that the manga couldn’t and I think it was very smart of Zexcs Studios to do this change. And again, I truly believe this is one of the most powerful and greatest psychological horror anime’s that I have seen. And there is also going to be a season 2, so I am truly looking forward to that too. If you haven’t seen this, then I truly recommend this anime. It will definitely change your life in one way or another.

  1. I've tried to watch this a couple of times but I just can't get into the early episodes. Reading about it, the show seems like something I would like but for now it is still sitting on the list of shows to give another shot to at some point.
